Why I Teach
I’ve been playing teacher since I was five. My parents hung a big whiteboard on the wall, and I immediately put it to use—gathering my younger siblings and neighborhood kids for class. Before long, our basement playroom was cramped with seven kids, all passing notes and following along with my lessons. Outside, I organized summer night games, my voice cutting through the chaos with a sharp “CARRR” whenever headlights appeared at the top of the hill. Maybe it was just the bossy older sibling in me, but I truly credit this time as the start of my love for teaching.
That love has only grown. I’ve been lucky to have incredible teachers who encouraged me to help my peers, deepening my understanding and sense of connection. There’s nothing more exciting than the moment confusion shifts to understanding, and I don’t just love experiencing it—I love inspiring it in others. I want to help students see things in new ways, challenge me, lift them up when they struggle, and celebrate their successes. Most of all, I want to create a safe, creative space where we can teach and learn together.
